Photo 612 Would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy 2012

As a Gallery, Photo 612 was very quiet in 2011 - The year was used to reflect - As a photo enthusiast, artist, and purveyor of all that it is beautiful, I took the year off to reflect over the value & beauty of paper. WOW!

The world seems to be going paperless - books are being replaced by kindles - What is the value of paper?! I was so perplexed by this question that I even printed some of my photographic art work on metal?!

Crisis Over!

Paper is a design of beauty - Printed matter is going no where. There is nothing like a gloriously designed piece of paper - whether it be a scribbling, drawing, printed advertisement, painting, or photograph ;)

A photo is defined : "A photograph (often shortened to photo) is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface"

What could be more beautiful than that?

Photo 612 will become more active in the upcoming year supporting on a project to project basis- Photo 612 will continue to list upcoming events that it finds of interest - Also make followers aware of Call for Art, etc.

Photo 612 will be taking a bit of a sabbatical here in the new year of 2011 ~ Thank you to everyone who has helped Photo 612 grow and thanks for your support :) Photo 612 will keep a FaceBook presence for the time being still sharing all news photographic. Photo 612 is fueled by the photographic passion of Christine Foster- me. I am so grateful to all of the friends who have come from the endeavours of Photo 612- It has been great to share my passion with others who are so equally passionate about the art of Photography. I am proud of what has been built as a group- the friends of photo 612 (you know who you are! ) - I attended a photo event last night and grinned when someone showed me that they were wearing a Photo 612 T-shirt! The sharing of photo ideas and even the swap of photo images- the collaborations made by sharing wall space and ideas- Again I am proud to have hosted so many great photographers since the inception of PHoto 612 in 2004 with the work of photographic artist Kelly Ryan taping a bunch of 5x7's to the wall- to the last show SILVER which hosted many greats including Larry Fink amongst many many others. The list of artists who have shared their work at photo 612 is really too amazing- Curators as Well! Thanks to Eric Mencher, Rob Asman, Edna Cardinale, and Martin McNamara for judging the Photo 612 Juried shows And thanks to Stephen Perloff and the Photo Review in it's support

Events will be kept to a minimum in 2011- Photo 612 is still receiving Portfolios for review and will share photo events of interest on it's FaceBook Page

Photo 612 will play juror this upcoming year & still partake in curating events

Dae Rebeck Sanchez

I stumbled upon Dae Rebeck Sanchez's work a few years back. I happened to see a card of hers at Moore College of Art & Design. I was immediately taken with her style and decided to look her up. As luck should have it she had just moved back to this area after living in New Mexico :) That seems so long ago!

Dae Rebeck Sanchez is a mixed media artist who has shown in museums, galleries, art centers and fine art festivals regionally and abroad. Dae works primarily with oil and acrylic paints, photo based transfers and collage on wood panel. Her narrative layered paintings focus on big skies, women, urban/suburban decay, pattern and the circus. She studied at The Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and received her degree from Moore College of Art and Design. Most recently Dae won “Best in Oil and Acrylics” at the 2009 Chestnut Hill Arts Festival and “Best in Mixed Media” at the 2007 Manayunk Arts Festival. Personal Universal, for me, refers to the fact that we experience universal truths through an entirely personal means. My work often asks universal questions and encourages the viewer to consider the universal human experience through the lens of cultural context. That which is universal - justice, love, life, and death – is experienced as personal by people all over the world. This particular project has not changed my point of view but has deepened it. Exhibiting my work with these women artists whose work is thoughtful, socially responsible, challenging, and beautiful allows my work to exist in a dynamic conversation on the issues we are all addressing.

Favorite Color:

Purple. Depending on its hue it can be both regal and spiritual. A deep purple can be quietly commanding and the fleetingness of a lavender sky strangely beautiful. It has significant depth in its derivations from a strong warm and strong cool color and has both these warm and cool inherent properties.

Three Artists You are Inspired By:

William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. Through their documentary style color snapshots of the American landscape they turn the aesthetics of ordinary rural and urban landscapes into personal poetry. Their work calls attention to the formal concerns of color and composition while isolating moments when the banality of the everyday is aligned to make the perfect moment that makes you feel something extraordinary. I am also inspired by the photos of photojournalist Steve McCurry who has the ability to convey a person’s true essence and to capture human emotion.

Define Your Personal Universal: Has your Personal Universe point of view changed from the start of this project?

I have always been curious how place affects a person’s ability to adapt, grow, belong and feel content. It is something constant that pushes me out of my comfort zone and allows me to think about place outside of what is familiar. This has stayed true throughout the development of this project. The timing of this show came together organically. Through knowing this group of photographers over the years we have shared common experiences about our travels and how through our work we hope to impact viewers in some way. This project reinforces the importance of the awareness of the places we live as they continue to change, modernize, become vulnerable, evolve, and are threatened, and to think responsibly about our role in it.

Artists Louise Bourgeois and Kara Walker continually inspire me for their ability to transform intimacy, including violence, into visual form. For the past year, I have been obsessed with the work of Susan Meiselas, not only her socially engaged photography, but how she uses images to activate memory and narrative.

Define Your Personal Universal: Has your Personal Universe point of view changed from the start of this project?
Recently, a Belizean friend described my personal universe as the “three sisters,” referring to the companion planting technique. My squash, maize, and climbing beans: art, research, and writing. I am a visual anthropologist interested, quite broadly, in how images shape social action. I also make images—photos, artist’s books, works-on-paper, paintings, collage—to record, process, and challenge my experiences. My art is often ethnographic in practice and incorporates archival materials and oral histories. My thoughts, actions, and dreamsare restless and never settle on one subject, medium, or place. As a current artist-in-residence at the 40^th Street Studios in West Philadelphia, I am exploring new mediums and expressions. I also teach undergraduate art history and anthropology classes and work as an editor for New City Community Press.
Where do you want to travel next?
During this exhibit, I will be in Belize to present findings from a two-year-long health research project there, and to photograph. And where to after that? Who knows?

HARRIS J. SKLAR

I am semi-retired from the practice of law and now able to follow my love for photography with a greater passion than ever. Photography was my hobby as a child and for years I developed and printed my photographs in a small darkroom I built in the basement of my North Philadelphia row home. I have continued to enjoy photography throughout my entire adult life, but was never able to make the commitment of time that I currently have to more fully develop my photographic skills.

Although I never had formal art training, I do take advantage of every available opportunity to improve my proficiency in the art of photography as well as better understand and enjoy art in every format. In my photographs, I am able to see and give expression to feelings that have grown within me over the years and I have gained a new dimension in life enabling me understanding it better.

The play of natural light plays a critical role in many of the subjects I photograph, especially people. I look at every photograph taken as a reflection of something deeper than what appears on the surface, telling its own personal story. The stories they tell may be different to you than to me, but hopefully they will help you, as they have me, reflect on who and where you are in life.

Each photograph I print represents to me a journey into or a reflection of part or time of my life and in my attempt to incorporate this into my photography, I attempt to demonstrate the feelings I had and atmosphere that was current at the time the photograph was taken. By personally printing all of these photographs I have hopefully achieved my objectives,

Not too long ago I published a book entitled A Backstretch Journey for which I spent two years documenting the life of the “Backstretch” at Philadelphia Park Racetrack. The photographs and quotes in the book demonstrates a life never before revealed to the public. Arriving at the track 5:00 AM, the time life begins at a racetrack, I took several thousand photographs, many of which are in the book. The book and reviews of it are available at Amazon.com.

Over ten years ago I volunteered to teach photography at the Clara Barton Elementary School in North Philadelphia (the school I attended as a child) and there developed a program where not only do I teach children photography skills, but also to use photographs they take to help them develop basic skills they will need throughout life such as writing, public speaking, and vocabulary.

For over 14 years I have been a volunteer photographer of the Komen Race For the Cure in Philadelphia which raises money for breast cancer research and many of my photographs are used in Konen’s brochures and postcards to promote the “Race”.

My work has been featured in a catalogue of the Key West Literary Seminar and has been selected in numerous Juried Competition for shows at galleries and I have won numerous awards including International Awards from the Philadelphia Print Center and the Artstrom Gallery in Rome, Italy.

The Show will hang thru the month of October. An image is being raffled off to help raise funds for the Young Survivors Coalition, a national advocacy who supports women under the age of 40 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Photo 612 is pleased to invite anyone travelling in Australia to visit the Ballarat PHoto Biennale. Photo 612, 2009 Juried show winner Tony Wood, Photo 612 Friend, Ted Adams, and photo 612 hostess, xtine, will be participating with an opening Sept. 19th with the slide show presentation Triptych . After many years of photography for hire, xtine had started to become jaded with the commercial image and missed the idea of an image for an image's sake. She contacted her friend and fellow Australian photographer Mark Avellino in hopes of bringing the fun back into photography and from the collaboration of the two, triptych began. "Triptych has become a weekly photodocumentary of my life. It opened my eyes to examing life as it is in front of me and has succeeded in bringing back the joy into my photography. I love having the challenge of finding a beautiful and/or ironic subject each week."
Mark & xtine had worked previously together on the 24/7 project- Malta- An international project bringing in photographers from all over the world to
photograph life on the island of Malta.
Fellow photographers hailing from Australia & Philadelphia Jennifer Ferguson, Fiona Lockhart, and Steven Crossot have also participated in keeping the Triptych project going since it's inception in January 2008.

Has Photo 612 gone Green? Has everyone stopped printing their Photos?
Photo 612 welcomes Eric Mencher, Kass Mencher, Ellie Brown, Amie Potsic, Tony Wood, Julia Blaukopf, Jeannie Pearce, Ted Adams, Laurence Salzman, and Laura Jean Zito for Photo 612's first Paperless Photography show. Artists were invited to live with a Quantum 10.2 Digital Frame and make it their own. My memories of living in NYC and watching artists design their own window at Barney's Department store downtown come to mind! Each Artist has been asked to personalise their Digital frame and design their own space around the frame. Should make for some great Diversity, cReativity and some surprises!

Submissions for The Juried Show III are due March 19. As in the past, the photographic theme is open. First Prize is a cash Prize.

Judge Martin McNamara is director & partner of Gallery 339, Philadelphia's only art gallery devoted to photography. McNamara began developing the business over five years ago. The focus of Gallery 339 is contemporary photography exhibiting a mix of local work as well as photography from around the world. McNamara's interest in photography came about as a collector. The gallery began it's program of exhibitions with a show of work by Korean photographer Bohnchang Koo and British photographer Edward Dimsdale. Artists recently exhibited have included Henry Horenstein, Amanda Means, and Tina Barney.

Thanks to Everyone who came to the photo swap. Angelo Benedetto's Photo "walked away" as the Swap Favorite, but there was alot of great work to be had. "My photographic work investigates the contemporary landscape of industrial America and examines our modern dependence on and destruction of the land. Hazardous waste sites, power plants, containment systems, and poisoned communities are connective themes in my photographs, reflecting a place of intersection between nature, industry, and community. I am interested in conveying through my images an aberrant relationship between humans and the land because we have changed our natural landscape through settlement, deforestation, and environmental pollution. Economic, population, and technological growth has fueled our modern dependence on and destruction of the land. Pollution has becomes synonymous to our cultures current demands for a quality of life while creating a waste-world in our very backyards that infringes on the quality of our health.
To experience these sites is like stepping back a hundred years, to witness America in the 21st century as it was in the 20th century during the industrial revolution, a place where man and machine dominate the land but with a modernized efficiency of new technology. Over the past year, I traveled cross-country visiting brown fields, EPA sites, strip mines, and poisoned communities. These images bear witness to the places I have visited and some of the people I have met. In these images I chose to hinder the horizon with man-made power lines, containment systems, smokestacks, power plants, and refineries. Visually obstructing, condensing, and flattening the horizon helps to provoke a sense of unease or quiet sickness. This repeated empty space of dead grass, pavement, or field in all of the photographs, serves as an intended metaphor for disconnect in my images as I pull the viewer’s eye back from the center of the image to evoke a feeling of abandonment, expanse space, or desolation.
At first glance many of these images appear as fakes, like constructed sets on a movie lot or digitally manipulated miniatures for the camera. Part of this illusion is emphasized by the lack of the human figures in the photograph; there is seldom a car or person in the foreground to reference scale of the buildings. The absence of people reinforces the presence of what people have constructed in the landscape. At first humans
may not seem to be present in the images; however, people are very much an integral part of the subject matter because the construction or destruction made by humans is the central topic of every photograph. I choose to omit people from Homelands to help separate the landscape from the human form or it’s belonging to an “other.” Deleting people from Homelands helps to make each space more general, as if the town could be anybody’s hometown.
Some of these sites are well known to the public, but many of them are not famous and are generally unknown to most people. . These lesser known towns and toxic spaces don’t share the same sense of disaster in the public eye usually equated with the more infamous sites such as Three Mile Island or Love Canal. However, these smaller and less familiar sites need the same public attention because these toxic places are equally devastating, costly, and dangerous to the ecosystem compared to other well-known disasters. These images are intended to empower and inform the viewer, while asking them to examine the impact of pollution in a familiar space being the landscape of our own hometowns and local communities.
The house becomes the factory in several of my images, or a foundation in the shadow of the power plant; searving, as a visual metaphor to reference the human body. Smoke stacks transform the building into a dangerous factory emitting chemical smoke, the type of pollution a person would want to protect themselves against by taking shelter inside their home. These images begin to investigate the border between civic space in the community and private place of the individual.
I want my viewer to have a sense that each town is not isolated but is part of a shared, very real and very human experience not unlike his or her own environment and the more critical eye that they may turn toward it. "

The Churchville Photography Club started as an outgrowth of photography courses offered at the Churchville Nature Center in 1983. Students of those classes started to meet informally at the Churchville Nature Center in April 1985 to continue the learning process by sharing their experiences and bringing in guest lecturers.

From its modest beginnings of 10 members, the Club now counts over 100 members. For many years the club's emphasis was on nature photography but the current membership represents all styles of photography. As a source to inspire, the club hosts programs from a variety of practicing photographers, photo shooting trips, contests and critiques

Tony Wood's Image, titled 'Bridget' came in second place. This image can also be seen hanging at the University of the ARts in Dorrance Hall for a limited time.

Photo 612 changed the prizes for 2008. There was to be only a First prize Chosen by Edna and then there was going to be a Director's prize (me) . The Director couldn't do it! Too hard- So left it to the Edna to choose both first and second prize. Something new tho' was introduced- the People's Choice Award! How fun was that! A chance to have your voice heard!
People's Choice was awarded to Sharon Harris for a Pinhole PHotograph- please come by the gallery to see it :)

Antarctic and Mountains by Tom Sheckels

The Antarctic Region is an awesome place to see. This past December, my wife and I traveled to the southern tip of South America and boarded a National Geographic-Lindblad ship for a three week journey into the southern Atlantic waters. We made many scenic stops along the way at the Falkland Islands and South Georgia before reaching the ultimate destination, the Antarctic Peninsula. Being early summer, the temperatures were cool, the days were long and newborn penguin chicks and seal pups were abundant through out. As you can see in these images, the views of the snow covered mountains and exotic wildlife were like nowhere else on earth, simply out of this world…..

Tom Sheckels

Sheckels was born in Bozeman, Montana, moved to Amherst, Massachusetts as a child and is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island. A professional engineer, Tom has lived in New Jersey since 1976 when he began his career as an Environmental Engineer for the Navy. He has over twenty-five years of environmental experience which has included the clean up of past hazardous waste dump sites and working with the clean water programs. Tom has traveled extensively for work and pleasure, and has found inspiration for his photography in many diverse and unique places, urban and remote, near and far. Using digital photography, Tom produces beautiful landscape panoramic photographic images. Often stitching a series of adjoining photos together, he makes images that provide a huge amount of detail, resolution, color and show great composition. Also Tom’s series of wildlife images, taken during expeditions to the Antarctica, Galapagos Islands, and several Southern Atlantic Islands show an exotic array of uncommon and colorful creatures in their natural habitat, including Penguins, Albatross, Elephant Seals, Sea Lions, Flamingos, Iguanas, Tortoises, Boobies, and a host of other intriguing birds and animals. He has won the International Association of Panoramic Photographers annual photo contest and exhibition with a first place and "Best in Show" for "Ship on Ice" that will be displayed at Photo 612.
Tom resides in Moorestown, New Jersey with his wife Lydia and is often seen walking Phoebe, a Pug around the block.

Resulting from his many journeys, you will behold a countless quantity of striking photographic visuals that will immediately strike you perceptionally, treating the word alluring as an understatement.

Occupying a place in the photography world, Paul Rider has been working as a freelance photographer since 1986, displaying his work in a number of exhibitations from 1986 to present day. Graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design in 1995 with studies emphasized on digital imaging and advanced color, Rider worked steadily to advance himself in the photography world, starting as a Senior Photographer for a studio set of the Strawbridge and Clothing company, and at the same time as a Exhibition Curator for the Level 3 Gallery in Philadelphia. As an adjunct photography instructor in 2003 to an advertising room set photographer in 2004 to 2006, he has esteemed to a highly respectable reputation diversing himself in a number of creative jobs. Since then, Paul Rider’s cleverly brilliant photographs taken from his latest journeys, is enough to amaze the likes of his peers and mentors. Rider proves that his diverse photography is everything and more for viewers and fans alike to be completely smitten and captured by his compositions.

Paul Rider is part of the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours which is presented by the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. His work will be displayed (along with other fellow Open Studio Tour Artists) on October 20-21 and October 27-28. On October 20-21 view Rider's work located at east of Broad Street in Old City and South Philly, and in neighborhoods like Northern Liberties, Kensington, Fishtown, and Port Richmond. And on October 27-28 visit artists working west of Broad Street in Center City and West Philly, and in neighborhoods such as Germantown, Mt. Airy, Roxborough and East Falls.
